Module #1 - SPB & C - Batted Ball on Infield Working Area Usage (Blacktop Area)

Mechanics Module #1: Batted Ball on Infield Working Area Usage

Issues to concentrate on:

    • Drive forward & hard into the “working area” - same thrust forward as a pick-off to 1st, but without stopping & pushing up …

    • Drive hard, forward & deeply into the working area while angling onto the diagonal line from home plate through 2nd base …Let the play slow & stop you ...

    • If R2 is advancing on a grounder to F6’s left or to F5, then drive hard to the 3rd base side of the mound to open an angle for a force into 2nd or a tag on R2 …Let the play slow & stop you ...

    • Position early & aggressively -- need better use of time during the early in play development ...

    • Play “Anticipation” -- Begin moving for the probable play -- Read the playing action on the move -- Compare against your experience for detail variance while moving ...

    • Move to the play side of the “working area” …

    • After the play, “bounce back” across the “working area” in anticipation of any secondary play possibilities …

Here is Module #2 review material for Sunday's training ...

If you have time to glance over some of it, it may help your learning on Sunday ...

B.38 – Level 3 Review Mechanics Detail – “Pulled” Foot Toward Home Plate Followed by a “Swipe” Tag

Mechanics Module #2a: SPA “Normal” Plays

Issues to concentrate on:

    • Overrunning needed “play” position based on fielding player release point …

    • “Play” position - 90 degree angle, 2-step fair & 2-step foul ...

    • Overrunning “play” position - hurts “adjusted” positioning for “swipe” tag - more to move back ...

    • Need to use diagonal corners of base to error check positioning …

    • Need better “swipe tag” play reads … Need earlier cues & movement …

    • Proper use of eyes on throw & play .. focus on bag & read F3’s feet better …

    • Position “fair” as much as possible - only go foul if “pressured” ...

Mechanics Module #2b: SPA “Special” Plays

Issues to concentrate on:

Teach logic why each “special” play needs that position ...

    • F1 Covers 1st Base - 2-step fair ...

    • F3 Covers Unassisted on a “Normal” Play - 2-step fair ...

    • Examples of Right Side “Pressure”

    • Right Side “Pressure” - Positioning - 2-step foul ...

B.60 – Level 3 Review Mechanics Detail – Pivot Adjustments – Pivot Location Adjustments – Advanced Positioning Concepts

B.61 – Level 3 Review Mechanics Detail – Pivot Adjustments – “Pro Look” Technique – Advanced Positioning Concepts

“Trouble” Ball to BU’s Area – BU Goes Out Review Material:

B.62 - B.75 – Concept Review – “Trouble” Ball to BU’s Area – BU Goes Out

Issues to concentrate on: Members strategies for reading fly balls are not effective → positioning, use of eyes, use of time available, adjustments for BR’s progress

    • Need to read these plays in time slices with specific purpose ...

    • Need to perform specific technical techniques ...

    • Need to identify visual cues to read & create decision points from ...

    • Need to use all time available more effectively ...

Read Ball off the Bat -- Time Slice #1:

    • As soon as the ball is hit, use early play time to maximum benefit - immediately “step up, turn & face the ball” … Advantage-disadvantage --increases read time by moving BU closer to the pivot point … minimal distance loss on fly ball coverage ...

    • Read fly ball trajectory, project (informed guess at) its relative landing position …

    • Perform in the short period of time before the batted ball leaves the infield or passes by BU ...

Read Players -- Time Slice#2:

    • As the batted ball leaves the infield ...

    • Next, focus on the players in the “projected” landing area proximity …

    • Read their movements & listen to players ...

    • Continue to observe the players movements throughout the total time available … patience - don’t hurry to a decision → don’t rush to a decision …

    • Your read & decision time is only limited by your ability to stay ahead of BR … Take risks, experiment & determine how long that is ...

    • Visual cues … C.O.I.L. C-converging, O-out hard, I-in hard, L-to the line … plus ground rulings …

    • Be patient - read the player the whole time available …

Decision Point - Go Out or Pivot -- Time Slice #3”

    • If they start to “break down” (slow up) under the ball, then they are showing you they are going to perform a “routine” catch … then pivot …

    • If they move even faster & lower to the ground, then go out … It will probably be a diving play …

    • If you cannot tell (the play doesn’t reveal itself to be routine), then “when in doubt, go out” ...

Movement Path “A” - Go Out -- Time Slice #4”

    • When going out to cover fly balls, always read the players & position so as to open a view of the open side of the ball …

    • If converging F8 & F9 ot F9 is facing the RF gap, move towards the LF gap (“rim”) the infield …

    • If F8 moves toward the RF gap or F9 opens up towards the RF line, then move down the RF line …

    • If you cannot tell whether F8 or F9 will catch the ball deep into the gap, then head straight at them until the play read reveals who will catch the ball …

    • When one of them calls for the ball or breaks down under it, then develop angle …

    • Move straight toward the RF fence if F8 shows he will catch it ...

    • Move straight towards the LF gap if F9 shows he will catch it ...

Movement Path “B” - Pivot -- Time Slice #4”

    • When maximizing the read time for your trouble fly ball read (“pushing the edge of the envelop”) … Key is to stay in front of BR …

    • “Anticipate” when you have to make a decision by so as to be able to enter the infield & stay in front of BR …

    • Learn from your experience base how long you have …

    • To stay ahead of BR, adjustments may be necessary to pivot point, pivot route, pivot technique, etc. to stay ahead of BR … Accepted adjustments are: (1) Shallowing of the pivot point … (2) Extending the point towards 2nd base … (3) Bowing the pivot route into the outfield … (4) “Pro Looking” into the infield ...

Mechanics Module #6a: Foul Fly Balls

Issues to concentrate on:

    • PU positioning on fair/foul -- PU’s are leaving the foul line prematurely & are in no man’s land … They are off the line & not enhancing angle for open side of fielder’s body ...

    • Make the play pull PU off the foul line -- Is it threatening the dugout, fence or will the player catch the ball turned toward either? Is the glove side of the fielders body away from you?

    • If the play is between, probably stay on the foul line & move aggressively up it to open the receiving side of the player’s body up to PU …

    • BU pivoting into the infield vs. going out -- Issues: fair/foul possibility on fly ball on the infield … Fly ball landing or near BU with play exploding on BU …

    • BU clearing F3 better -- Also see PU Clearing F2 ...

Mechanics Module #6b: Rundowns

Issues to concentrate on:

    • BU needs enough depth from the baseline to roughly mirror the runner & see plays on the runner well ...

    • PU needs to come down in foul territory …

    • PU enters rundown when the runner is moving away & there is sufficient distance from 1st base …

    • If tag occurs between the umpires, then make eye contact & communicate who will take the tag ...

Single Runner coverage techniques …(review)

    • Between 1st & 2nd … half & half or cutout coverage … work out at pregame with partner ...

    • Between 2nd & 3rd … half & half or cutout coverage … work out at pregame with partner ...

    • Between 3rd & Home …half & half ...

    • Between 1st & Home … half & half ...

Multiple Runner coverage concepts …

Issues to concentrate on:

    • PU assuming R3 between 3rd & home …

    • PU angles toward the 3rd base dugout to gain depth & reduce working path needed to cover the play with 45 degree angles on each side …

    • PU voices he has it all …

    • BU stays with 3rd until PU calls for it all

    • When PU calls for it all, BU bounces away & covers trail runner(s) …

    • If a trailing runner reacquires 3rd, then BU will voice he has that end & retake tags there ...

Lead vs. Training runner(s)...

Trailing Runner(s) …

    • R2 & R1 … PU stays home … BU limits movement for multiple runner responsibilities ...

    • R3 & R1 … PU stays home … BU limits movement for multiple runner responsibilities ...

    • R3 & R2 … PU stays home … BU limits movement for multiple runner responsibilities ...

    • R3, R2 & R1 … PU stays home … BU limits movement for multiple runner responsibilities ...

Lead Runner ...

    • R2 & R1 … same of PU as single runner between 2nd & 3rd … BU limits movement for multiple runner responsibilities ...

    • R3 & R1 … PU angles deep toward 3rd base dugout … Assumes all R3 when can … BU takes dive back to 3rd until PU calls for all of R3 … Then, BU repositions for possible plays on trail runner(s) … Bu reacquires 3rd if R1 advances to 3rd ...

    • R3 & R2 … PU angles deep toward 3rd base dugout … Assumes all R3 when can … BU takes dive back to 3rd until PU calls for all of R3 … Then, BU repositions for possible plays on trail runner(s) … BU reacquires 3rd if R2 advances to 3rd ...

    • R3, R2 & R1 … PU angles deep toward 3rd base dugout … Assumes all R3 when can … BU takes dive back to 3rd until PU calls for all of R3 … Then, BU repositions for possible plays on trail runner(s) …

B.127 – Level 3 Review Mechanics Detail – Bases Loaded – Rundown develops between 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 3rd

Issues to concentrate on:

    • Position early & aggressively -- need better use of time during the early play development ...

    • Drive forward & hard into the “working area” - same thrust forward as a pick-off to 1st, but without stopping & pushing up after the 2nd step … Glide & settle into a standing set position ...

    • Drive hard, forward & deeply into the working area while angling onto the diagonal line from home plate through 2nd base …Settle 8-12 ft directly behind the F1 mound dirt/grass line …

    • If R2 is advancing on a grounder to F6’s left or to F5, then drive hard to the 3rd base side of the mound to open an angle for a force into 2nd or a tag on R2 … Move to the play side of the “working area” … Let the play slow & stop you ...

    • Play “Anticipation” -- Begin moving for the probable play -- Read the playing action on the move -- Compare against your experience for detail variance while moving ...

    • After the play, “bounce back” across the “working area” in anticipation of any secondary play possibilities …

    • Use your “instincts” (game knowledge & experience base) to help you anticipate potential plays …

    • Use “advantage-disadvantage” … “Likely-unlikely” … “strategic planning to protect against less likely plays occurring” theories to help you dynamically position …

    • Maintain “play initiative” & “positioning advantage” in movements … It’s a giant chess game …

    • Balance multiple runner needs … Compromise some movement to protect possible secondary play action movement needs …

Mechanics Module #2a & 2b: SPA Plays

Teach logic why each “special” play needs that position ...

    • F1 Covers 1st Base - 2-step fair ...

    • F3 Covers Unassisted on a “Normal” Play - 2-step fair ...

    • Examples of Right Side “Pressure”

    • Right Side “Pressure” - Positioning - 2-step foul ...

Mechanics Module #3: SPA - “Pivot” or “Go out on fly ball”

Issues to concentrate on: Members strategies for reading fly balls are not effective → positioning, use of eyes, use of time available, adjustments for BR’s progress

    • Need to read these plays in time slices with specific purpose ...

    • Need to perform specific technical techniques ...

    • Need to identify visual cues to read & create decision points from ...

    • Need to use all time available more effectively …

    • Need to check F8 & F9 positioning often - “head on a swivel” - to help anticipate hard, low liner dive plays quickly ...

    • When going out to cover fly balls, always read the players & move to open a view of the open side of the ball …

    • Experiment & take risks in lower level games where you won’t hurt yourself … You will never maximize your umpiring if you don’t take some risks & flirt with failure … Living in “safety” & “security” is not how you become a great umpire …

    • Use many thoughts as batted ball to infield working area usage ...

    • Drive forward & hard into the “working area” - same thrust forward as a pick-off to 1st, but without stopping & pushing up …

    • Drive hard, forward & deeply into the working area while angling onto the diagonal line from home plate through 2nd base …Let the play slow & stop you …

    • On fly ball, view the catch in primary vision without taking your eyes off of it until a “voluntary release” ...

    • On fly balls, line up the runner just outside of center of vision -- see the runner’s leave in peripheral vision ...

Mechanics Module #6a & 6b: Foul Fly Balls & Rundowns
