NCOA Instruction L5.1 Mechanics-Pickoff-Steals-Classwork_012015

In the following situations, describe completely:

(1) How the umpires should develop their “play” & “adjusted” (if necessary) positions …

(2) How should the umpires be using their eyes throughout the play sequence(s) …

(3) What “cues” are the umpires looking for and “keying” off of during the play development …

(4) How do these “cues” determine any additional actions the umpires need to take …

Pick-Off Situation #1: With R1 only on base, F1 picks to 1st, but overthrows F3 … The ball ricochets & rolls down the RF line towards the bullpen area (like the large foul territories at ARC) … R1 rounds 2nd & advances to 3rd A play occurs on R1 sliding into 3rd base …

Pick-Off Situation #2: With R2 & R1 on bases, F2 attempts a pick-off at 2nd & overthrows into CF … R2 advances to 3rd … F8 backs up the play and throws to 3rd the play on R2 sliding into 2nd base … During this playing action, R1 then advances to 2nd

Steal Situation #1: R1 steals 2nd - The throw is straight into 2nd base with F6 covering … F6 takes the throw at the bag … R1 beats the play but slides so hard as to lose contact with the back of the bag as he slides through … R1’s momentum takes him straight towards the LF “gap” about 18 inches … R1 scrambles to get back as F6 swipes another tag on him …

Steal Situation #2: R1 steals 2nd base - The throw is hooking in front of 2nd & into the baseline 1st & 2nd bases … F6 cuts in front of the base to catch the throw … (a) R1 slides straight towards the base & F6 attempts a high swipe tag on R1 … (b) R1 seeing F6’s fielding adjustment avoids the tag by sliding wider, but loses contact with the backside of 2nd base … F6, who was covering the base, dives back across the base to tag R1 …

Steal Situation #3: With R3 & R1 on bases, R1 is stealing 2nd … F4 cuts in front of 2nd base for a possible “cut” play … F4 allows the throw to go through to F6 covering 2nd base … (a) F6 catches a normal throw & applies a tag to R1 sliding straight into the base … (b) F6 “picks” the throw out of the dirt & attempts to swipe a tag on R1 sliding wide …

Steal Situation #4: With R3 & R1 on bases, R1 is stealing 2nd … F2 pump fakes to 2nd & then throws to “back door” R3 at 3rd … R3 “bit” on the pump fake after a strong secondary lead by taking a couple more steps & is struggling to get back by siding wide into foul territory towards the 3rd base coaches box to avoid F5’s swipe tag away from BU…

Steal Situation #5: With R2 & R1 on bases, both runners are stealing (a “double” steal attempt) … F2 pump fakes to 3rd & then throws to play on the “trail” runner (R1) at 2nd base who had a late jump … The throw is: (a) straight into the base for the fielder to apply a tag … (b) up the line requiring a “swipe” tag attempt or (c) R1 slides hard & late beating the play, but loses contact with the base and slides straight through it … The field then attempts another tag on the backside of the base …
